I wrote my thesis on deceptive design and dark patterns in UX. For my exhibition piece, I designed a “Wall of Shame” that aimed to highlight common dark patterns we may see when browsing the web, popular sites that utilize dark patterns, and how we can learn to avoid them.

For my exhibition project, I took inspiration from neobrutalism, a style that consists of bold colors and lines with an emphasis on shapes and decorative components. I then developed multiple prototypes and assets that would go on the wall, along with some interactive elements to encourage more engagement from viewers like folders that could be opened to reveal facts, and a survey to learn about how people interact with dark patterns.

The reception was a success! It was so great to be able to show off a project that I had worked on for so long to my peers, friends, family, and other creatives. Many people told me that they had learned something new, which made me glad because it meant I achieved my main goal of educating others about deceptive design. I was also surprised to learn that it was voted best in show by the attendees. I’m very grateful that people enjoyed my work enough to vote for it.
